Field Technician position in Plant Evolutionary Ecology
The Sheth plant evolutionary ecology lab in the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology at North Carolina State University (Raleigh, NC) is currently seeking an enthusiastic field technician to participate in an NSF-funded study of eco-evolutionary responses to climate change across a species range. We combine field and greenhouse experiments, demographic modeling, and quantitative genetics to examine constraints to adaptation to climate across species geographic ranges. We strive to foster an inclusive environment where people from all backgrounds are respected and we especially welcome applicants from historically underrepresented or excluded groups.
Dates: January through October of 2023 (exact dates flexible)
Locations: San Diego, CA; Wawona, CA; and Eugene, OR
Pay: $17/hour
Expected duties: The successful candidate will contribute to a collaborative study of eco-evolutionary responses to climate change in the scarlet monkeyflower, Mimulus cardinalis, a perennial herb that grows in riparian habitats in western North America. The technician’s primary responsibilities involve coordinating research among multiple institutions by establishing and monitoring field and greenhouse experiments, training and managing personnel, and collecting and managing data at three field sites in California and Oregon. The technician will have opportunities to train and mentor undergraduate students and work with graduate students in the Sheth lab and the research teams of Dr. Chris Muir at the University of Hawaii, Dr. Lluvia Flores-Renteria at San Diego State University, Dr. Jay Sexton at UC Merced, and Dr. Jeff Diez at the University of Oregon.
Required qualifications
Additional information: Housing near each field site will be provided. The field technician would ideally have a reliable personal vehicle available for traveling within and between field sites, and would receive mileage reimbursements for gas. We are committed to creating a safe and respectful working environment for all crew members. We have a thorough COVID-19 and field safety plan and expect that all crew members will comply with it.
To apply: Please submit the following materials to https://jobs.ncsu.edu/postings/168871 as a single pdf: 1) a cover letter describing your interest in and qualifications for this position (including your available dates), 2) current CV or resume (with relevant coursework included), and 3) contact information (phone number and email address) for 2 references.
